The marquee events on the Victoria Derby Day card are the four Group 1 races, Victoria Derby (2500m), Mackinnon Stakes (2000m), Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) and the Myer Classic (1600m).

But plenty of punters also enjoy the action of the Carbine Club Stakes, which is a 1,600m gallop for three-year-olds at set weights worth an attractive $200,000 in prize money.

It provides an opportunity for handy runners, as opposed to the season’s star three-year-olds, to have a run at the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Carbine Club Stakes History

Run by the Victoria Racing Club (VRC), the Carbine Club Stakes was first held in 1983 as a Listed event and the inaugural winner was Wage Freeze.

The race reached its current Group 3 status in 1998 and in recent times has been won by the likes of Kidnapped (2009), Dr. Doute’s (2008) and Zacroona (2007).

The Carbine Club Stakes is currently sponsored by Inglis and has a field limit of 16 starters.

Carbine Club Stakes Betting

There are a number of earlier spring races that punters can use as a guide for their Carbine Club Stakes betting.

Good lead-up events that runners may come via include the Group 3 Red Anchor Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley a week earlier or the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) at Randwick in early October.

The best betting tip for the Carbine Club Stakes and all other spring racing is to avoid the TAB and lock in a better price at an online bookmaker such as Ladbrokes.com.au or bookmaker.com.au.
